CONGRATS to my good friend, Nick, for this awesome review of his restaurant El Rey by Pete Wells in the NY Times on July 28.
Here’s his “3 Questions with” from January 19, 2015.
Nick Morgenstern is a LES/East Village restaurant maven. He has a HUGE hit on his hands with Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream (literally two doors from me on Rivington Street and jam-packed even when it’s 10 degrees outside!!). He’s also running a really cool luncheonette, El Rey, on Stanton Street, and he’s just opened GG’s pizza, a reboot of his former Goat Town restaurant on 5th Street that is getting raves for its “grandmas pie”.
I’ve gotten to know Nick as a neighbor (and fellow gym goer – we have our best convos while I’m on the elliptical) and I just really love his entrepreneurial spirit. He’s a quintessential foodie impresario with lots of ideas, a collaborative spirit and the will to” just get it done”. A Recipe for Success if you ask me!!
Am so thrilled that he is sharing some of his favorite spots with us – quite a few in my neighborhood that I was not aware of – so THANK YOU Nick!!!
Three Favorite spots
Il Buco: Chef Joel Hough has always had a quite confidence in his food that I admire. His food does not take itself too seriously, is always delicious, clean and clear.
That SERVICE in that ROOM.
Pasta and Dessert. At the Bar. Brooks Headley is one of the most inspiring chefs in food right now. His desserts are great. Not too sweet, always interesting with a little sarcasm.
