5 cool things to see at Frieze Art Fair NYC 2016

4 Stars

frieze 2016

Frieze Art Fair is up thru Sunday May 8 at Randall’s Island in NYC. Great fair as always but I’m calling it the Instagram Fair because it really appeared as if most galleries organized their booths based on what was most instagram-worthy. So lots of pops of color, installations, and shimmering surfaces.  It’s not bad, just a different emphasis – but I do pity some of the galleries who hadn’t gotten the message about instagram. Most booths showing quieter, more elegant work were lonely places indeed.

Here are my 5 Top Picks:

1. Maurizio Cattelan’s Donkey

The donkey, Sir Gabriel, is the hit of the fair.  I first saw him frolicking on the grass outside the Fair tent with his trainer, David Peloza! And then I saw him in his very fancy chandeliered digs. Read more in the link above about this restaging of Maurizio Cattelan’s first US show, in 1994, at Daniel Newburg Gallery in SoHo. Totally awesome!!

2. Soylent, from artist Sean Raspet, at Berlin-based Societe Gallery

The artist presents Soylent products/prototypes in a trade show setting complete with refrigerated cases. Raspet had approached the company in 2014 about developing abstract flavors. Soylent then hired him as an in-house flavorist. The booth signifies the intersection of art, science and technology.

3. KAR-A-SUTRA by Anthea Hamilton (After Mario Bellini)

Anthea Hamilton pays homage to Italian architect/designer Mario Bellini with this green vehicle, moved around the fair, complete with a troupe of mimes “drinking”, “smoking” and generally exhibiting a lot of ennui.

4. Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys, The Small Dirty Puppets from Pruppà @ Gavin Brown

A phenomenal wall installation of small doll-puppets by Belgian duo, Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys.

5. David Altmejd installation at Andrea Rosen Gallery

Le désert et la semence (2015), offers an alternative tableau of human evolution. Totally mesmerizing.
