Amanda Dolan is an artist, stylist and vintage fashion entrepreneur. She founded SPARK PRETTY, a visual lifestyle brand and virtual vintage shop, after years of shopping, thrifting and vintage hunting for her personal collection.
Amanda’s experience in fashion as a stylist for (her longtime fashion idol) Betsey Johnson, alongside her fine arts background, color her unique style perspective. I am beyond thrilled that Amanda agreed to document her day for us starting with Intention Candle Lighting and Yoga, thru thrifting, art making and dinner out! Thank you Amanda!!
Good Morning! 9AM-ish
Anyone who knows me..is aware I am NOT a “Morning Person” So I’ve found that a wakeup time of 9AM(ish) is the perfect balance of early enough to get things done, but late enough not to be a cranky mess! And my Dog Pearl tends to agree…
10AM- INTENTION CANDLE LIGHTING
I am obsessed with these custom carved ‘Intention Candles’ from Enchantments on east 9th street. They are a terrific way to release your gratitude into the Universe. Just concentrate on your latest and most important intentions, close your eyes, and light that Baby up to guarantee a day full of “Good Juju.” The one I’m currently burning was carved with the Intentions of A Successful Business filled with Glamorous Clothes, and to have an Open Heart to Love and Abundance.
10:30AM – NAMASTE!
I love Yoga- I’m lucky enough to be taught privately once a week by the Greatest Yoga Teacher of all Time- Brian Liem. So on all the other days of the week I like to get at least some good Yoga Stretching and Breathing in by myself. It helps me feel open and ready for the day! I Love a Good ‘Tree Pose.’ Sometimes I alternate between Yoga and my other favorite exercise – Aerobics. I’m an avid Richard Simmons Fan (as you can see by my Vintage ’80 Simmons Show Shirt) So some mornings you can literally catch me “Sweatin to the Oldies”…
11:25AM- NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT LIPSTICK ON..
My Grandmother always taught me to put lipstick on before I left the house. It was her daily Mantra and now has become mine. Doesn’t matter where I’m going..the lipstick stays on. I really like Lime Crime’s “Poisonberry” -its become my go-to color.
11:30AM – A GOOD WALK IN THE PARK
My French bulldog Pearl is my best friend and constant companion. Every day I take her for a nice long walk. It helps me clear my thoughts and get organized for the day. And I love seeing her so happy as she struts her stuff down the avenues. We frequent Washington Square Park Daily, and when the weather is really nice we enjoy walking all the way down to The West Side.
12:30PM – GUESS I SHOULD GET SOME WORK DONE…
A Perk of owning your own small business and being able to work from home are those fabulous flexible hours! Since I have an e-commerce store for my Vintage Clothing, I like to provide my customers with tons of information before they purchase an item. This means, every day I go through my inventory that I keep in storage. I measure each and every garment. I calculate the Costs and check my Profit Margins.
Then I spend a few hours on the computer uploading images of the items (that I’ve pre-modeled and styled at private photoshoots), I type up the measurements, write fun description synopsis’s and styling suggestions under each item. After all that is done, logged and saved, I usually upload a few new items to my Etsy Shop and Instagram account to keep it fresh. I’m a One Woman Business so I’ve gotta do it all! But I love every second of it.
3:30PM POST OFFICE RUN!
I am at the 4th Avenue Post Office every single day. Window 10 and I are in a solid long term relationship by now! Since my business is mostly online, I run to the Post Office every day to ship out new orders. I ship worldwide- Today there were orders to California, Australia, South Korea and Saudi Arabia! Never a dull moment with Vintage Clothing!
-Then I like to hop over to Liquiteria and treat myself to a cold-pressed juice. My absolute Favorite is their “Grasshopper”- I’m addicted.
After That I usually check out what’s fresh at the Union Square Farmers Market. Love my Veggies!
The best part of my work is Thrifting. I call it “Treasure Hunting” … No Matter Where I am, there is always a thrift- of- the -day experience. Its the way I collect unique and exciting inventory for my customers and stay inspired and motivated. Some days You can find me knee high in boxes of clothes at Estate Sales and Warehouses
Or digging through bins at a local Flea Market or Vintage Bizarre. I found that 70’s Denim Jumpsuit at an outside flea festival in Massachusetts
And check out that purple Couch I spotted on the street!!! I’m telling you, if you know how to look, there will be a vintage treasure awaiting You.
7:30PM- MAKE SOME ART…
Before I got into Fashion I was Painting full time. I studied Mixed Media art at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, So creating art is engrained in me. Whether Im just painting for myself, or working on a custom Commission, I always squeeze in a little creative time every day…even if its just for an hour or so. My latest finished project were these Custom Made “Spark Pretty” boots for CAT FOOTWEAR. They are being displayed in all the Company Flagship Stores around the world. It was one of my all-time favorite projects. Getting to combine art and fashion was a dream come true.
8:30PM – WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
I consider Myself the luckiest gal in town. I have the best most eclectic group of friends! Im blessed. So, Usually, I have an evening activity to attend. Sometimes its a movie, or a fab dinner party, sometimes the theatre, a concert, a private sale, who knows! Living in NYC there’s excitement around every corner.
9:15PM- THE NIGHT IS OURS..
Tonights activity is a good one. I’m meeting my Best Friend Meagan for what we call “Wine Time” and Dinner. Meagan is a great pal. She is also a crucial part of Spark Pretty. She is constantly out scouting and thrifting with me, She assists me at all my Pop-Up Booth locations, helps me style shoots and sometimes you can find her hidden under a giant pile of clothes on my floor that need to be sorted for inventory. What A Gal! We could sit around for hours and talk and talk over a crispy Pinot Grigio or Gruner. Having a best friend who understands Me is imperative to my well being! And so is Wine!
12:30AM- A LITTLE LIGHT READING…
I like to get in my favorite PJ’s and cuddle up with a good book before Bedtime. I Usually keep it light and fun. I love short essays and personal stories. Favorites include Jonathan Ames, Michael Musto, Chelsea Handler, Mindy Kaling… Tonights selection is “Girl Walks into a Bar” by Rachel Dratch. Goodnight and Sweet Dreams! xox
