Blessing of The Bikes at Cathedral of St. John The Divine

Blessing of the bikes

Have to thank my friend Cary Lawson for nudging me to get myself up to the Cathedral of St. John The Divine this morning for the annual blessing of the bikes. I believe it is always done the Saturday before the 5 Boro Bike Ride (which I am doing tomorrow – look for a post on Monday).

The Blessing was a wonderful experience. Uplifting and very poignant as we remember all the cyclists who have died in accidents in the last year – the procession of the riderless bike is extremely emotional for anyone who rides bike in the city.  I will definitely make this an annual ritual pre-5 boro ride. They’ve been doing the blessing for 17 years and I only just got on it!  And for all those pet lovers out there, in October, they also do an annual blessing of the animals for the Feast of St. Francis.

Note – the bells you hear in the video are our bicycle bells which we are encouraged to ring during the blessing.
