Amazing nite as always at the Macy’s Balloon Inflation – it gets more jampacked every year but I still recommend it to anyone visiting NYC over Thanksgiving. I much prefer this behind-the-scenes “for the people” preview vs. the actual parade.
This year I elected to come later in the evening (6:30pm vs. my usual 4pm) because I wanted to see the balloons in a more ready state. The crowds are way, way more intense but it’s also much more fun to see the balloons already inflated.
My favorites this year include:
- Trixie the Dog (first flight this year)
- Trolls (first flight this year – my pics do not do them justice)
- Felix the Cat (copy of the original one – much smaller than today’s humongous balloons)
We also managed to grab dinner at the brand-new and very buzzy White Gold. Love it – one of the coolest restaurants on the UWS. It’s April Bloomfield’s new butcher shop/restaurant and it’s really good altho I was disappointed that neither of the items I had specifically wanted to try after reading about them, were actually on the menu i.e. the rotisserie chicken with Pio Pio-inspired green sauce or the housemade sausages. Nevertheless, definitely recommend but with several warnings: it’s pricey, has no liquor license and tons of strollers and raucous kids (it is the UWS!!).
And finally, big thrill for me: we got to see former Mayor Bloomberg at the Balloon Inflation (with his grandchildren (?) and a full security detail getting a private tour – best mayor ever, totally miss him!).
