Checked out the new Sony Square Showplace located in Sony’s NYC HQs this past Friday. My super-techie friend, Shawn Anderson, joined me which was cool because I was able to experience the entertainment technology esp. the new Playstation VR gear, through his eyes (btw, he gives it a big thumbs up!)
Compared to the Samsung 837 store which serves as a cultural hub with multiple immersive experiences, Sony Square comes up short. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, but the design and displays are underwhelming. It felt like it was done on a shoestring budget, almost an after-thought. I had seen several of the LifeSpace UX innovations in March at the Architectural Digest Design Show (where the Sony booth was GREAT – link here).
All this aside, it is still worth a visit to get a glimpse at the latest innovations in entertainment and technology. Some of the items are still in prototype stage.
After Labor Day the entire space will be dedicated to the world of virtual reality with PlayStation VR – preparing for their launch in October.
Sony Square is at 25 Madison Avenue. Hours: Mon – Sat: 10am – 7pm; Sun: 11am – 6pm
